The Right Tree for the Right Location

The Right Tree for the Right Location

Blog

There is more to planting a tree then just putting it into the ground. Different species have different needs. And therefore not all locations are suitable.

Some considerations to keep in mind when choosing a tree and location:

  1. Height.  LOOK UP! Will the tree grow into anything at its full height – such as hydro wires?
  2. Canopy spread. How wide will the tree grow?
  3. Will the tree loose its leaves in the winter? Important if you want year round privacy.
  4. Form or shape. A columnar tree will grow in less space. Round and V-Shaped species provide the most shade.
  5. Growth rate. How long will it take for your tree to reach its full height? Slow growing species typically live longer than fast growing species.
  6. Soil, sun, and moisture requirements.
  7. Fruit. You may want to ensure that trees that drop fruit or nuts are not doing so on your car!
  8. Hardiness zone. Can the tree or shrub handle the cold winters of your location?
